Bab Touma dates back to the era of the Romans, but it was rebuilt again in 1228 during the reign of King Al-Nasir David. Bab Touma is also considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Damascus and was called Thomas in relation to Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Christ.
